Like most people, we're not happy with the dramatic rise in insurance premiums. Many factors affect premiums, i.e., car type and model, driving record, credit profile, location, etc., etc., so we researched dozens of national insurers using a plethora of scenarios to find the best value. Interestingly, our research revealed that membership in organizations claiming to have preferential "exclusive" deals with national insurers usually resulted in higher premiums. The companies that usually popped up as offering the best value without the need to join any organization were Traveler's and GEICO.
Several insurers require fitting the insured car with a GPS or On-Board Diagnostics device, a particularly good option for that exotic or collector car, or any car provided you have a good driving record. For those that may not have the best driving record, there are other options, including premiums based on miles driven that can reduce premiums significantly.
