The Uniden R-7 was already our favorite but the R-8 is even better, making it our top choice.
Although it doesn't have quite as much range as our runner-up (the Valentine-1) the Uniden R-8 still has great range in all four directions but without all the false alarms that some units with long range are prone to. It's also got great features we love, including its Spectre Elite undetectable feature which does a great job blocking police scanners looking for radar detectors. And with free software updates, you always have the latest version. It's a bit pricey, but if you want to avoid expensive speeding tickets, none do it better than Uniden's R-8. Average Price: $699
Valentine 1 is by far the radar detector with the longest range, in all directions, but it's susceptible to chatter, which can make for a noisy interior at times. Its price is on the high side but it's a great unit. Average Price: $899
It doesn't have the longest range but Escort 360 has really great features, including Waze-type alerts that continually update radar locations and it comes with a ticket-payment guarantee. Average Price $799
The Cobra Rad 700i is a great unit if you want an easy-to-use low-cost solution. But don't let its simplicity or low-cost fool you, it performs way above its price point and is a bargain. Average Price $249
The Radenso DS1 scores well in most categories, although it's not as sharp with rear and 90-degree detection. But it also has fewer false alarms than most and for the price it's up there with the leaders. Average Price: $399
